Herbie Always Foundation

May 8, 1972 – June 19, 2013

Herbie De La Cruz was born and raised in Los Angeles, California and was the only son of Jimmy De La Cruz and Zenaida Calalang. As a true testament of Filipino-American culture of family and community, many would agree that Herbie was, quite simply, the glue that kept everyone together. In June 2013, Herbie’s life was cut short due to medical reasons—but his dedication to family and friendship, and the kindness and generosity he extended to everyone, continue to impact those who love him and knew him. It was agreed by Herbie’s family and friends that the simple act of getting together on a regular basis would help keep Herbie alive in our hearts, while at the same time allow us the opportunity to continue to make a positive impact in the lives of others as Herbie did with us.

To honor his memory and carry on Herbie’s spirit of humility, generosity and caring for children, the Herbie Always Foundation was created with the initial focus of establishing a scholarship in his name at his high school alma mater, Loyola High School of Los Angeles. In only two years and thanks to numerous supporters, the foundation reached the minimum endowment level of $50,000.00 to establish the scholarship, which will provide assistance to well deserving recipients for several years to come.

With this initial objective now complete, the foundation has broadened its efforts to supporting and encouraging the education, health and wellness of all youth in our community. Through fundraising, outreach and volunteer programs, our intention is to uplift and enrich the hearts, minds and lives of our youth.

Thank you to all our supporters for joining our Herbie Always family. Pinkies up!
